ExpressVPN is a virtual private network service offered by the British Virgin Islands-registered company Express VPN International Ltd.[1] The software is marketed as a privacy and security tool that encrypts users’ web traffic and masks their IP addresses.[2]
In 2018, both TechRadar and Comparitech named the service their Editors’ Choice.[3][4]

Features[edit]
ExpressVPN has released apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and routers.[5] The apps use a 4096-bit CA, AES-256-CBC encryption, and TLSv1.2 to secure user traffic.[6][7] Available VPN protocols include OpenVPN (with TCP/UDP), SSTP, L2TP/IPSec, and PPTP.[8]
Servers[edit]
As of March 2019, ExpressVPN runs over 3,000 remote servers in 160 locations and 94 countries, with the largest numbers of servers located in Brazil, Canada, United States, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.[9]
Censorship[edit]
In July 2017, ExpressVPN announced in an open letter that Apple had removed all VPN apps from its App Store in China, a revelation that was later picked up by The New York Times and other outlets.[10][11][12] In response to questions from U.S. Senators, Apple stated it had removed 674 VPN apps from the App Store in China in 2017 at the request of the Chinese government.[13]
Assassination of Andrei Karlov[edit]
In December 2017, ExpressVPN came into the spotlight in relation to the investigation of the assassination of Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov. Turkish investigators seized an ExpressVPN server which they say was used to delete relevant information from the assassin’s Gmail and Facebook accounts.[14][15] Turkish authorities were unable to find any logs to aid their investigation, which the company said verified its claim that it did not store user activity or connection logs, adding; 'while it’s unfortunate that security tools like VPNs can be abused for illicit purposes, they are critical for our safety and the preservation of our right to privacy online. ExpressVPN is fundamentally opposed to any efforts to install 'backdoors' or attempts by governments to otherwise undermine such technologies.'[16]
Reception[edit]
TorrentFreak has interviewed ExpressVPN in their annual comparison of VPN providers since 2015.[17][18][19]
On 14 January 2016, ExpressVPN was criticized by former Google information security engineer Marc Bevand for using weak encryption.[20]Bevand had discovered that only a 1024-bit RSA key was used to encrypt the service's connections after using it to test the strength of the Great Firewall of China.[20]Bevand described ExpressVPN as 'one of the top three commercial VPN providers in China' and asserted that the Chinese government would be able to factor the RSA keys to potentially spy on users.[20]On January 25, ExpressVPN announced that it would soon roll out an upgraded CA certificate.[21]On February 15, Bevand wrote in an update that ExpressVPN had reported to him that they had now switched to 4096-bit RSA keys.[20]
In a review done by PCMag UK editor Max Eddy in May 2017, the service scored 4 out of 5 with the bottom-line being that although the service wasn't the fastest, it 'certainly protects your data from thieves and spies.'[22]In October 2017, TechRadar gave the service 4½ out of 5 stars, calling it 'a premium service with well-crafted clients, an ample choice of locations and reliable performance.'[23]PC World rated the service 3½ out of 5 in their September 2017 review, commending it for its easy-to-use software while criticizing 'the secrecy behind who runs the company.'[24] The service received 4.5 out of 5 stars from VPNSelector in their July 2019 review putting it to the first place among VPN providers.[25]
In December 2017, ExpressVPN announced a “Privacy Research Lab” project, including open source leak testing tools released on GitHub.[26] The tools enable users to determine if their VPN provider is leaking network traffic, DNS, or true IP addresses while connected to the VPN, such as when switching from a wireless to a wired internet connection.[27]Comparitech tested the tools with 11 popular VPN services and found leaks across every VPN provider, with the exception of ExpressVPN. However they clarified, “To be fair, ExpressVPN built the test tools and applied them to its own VPN app prior to publication of this article, so it has already patched leaks that it initially detected.“[28]

The very best forSpeed, Security and Privacy!
The title pretty much says it all. Those are the three main reasons most people get a vpn in the first place. I’ve researched every vpn that I have been able to discover, personally had accounts with five other major vpn providers and talked to others about their experiences using this very important yet highly misunderstood service.
It is amazing to me that most of us browse the internet with rose colored glasses, especially anyone under the age of 40 who grew up in the internet age. If you take one thing from this review it should be this: PEOPLE LIE. OK, maybe that is kinda harsh. How about this: people will say just about anything to sell a product. They often bend the truth. Just because you read it on the internet does NOT make it true. There are no internet police verifying the accuracy of ads and misrepresentations.
I have found at least 10 vpn’s claiming to me the fastest, and at least as many to be the most secure or providing the highest levels of security. But dig a little and these claims are inevitably false. Only a few back up their words with actions. Express vpn more and better than any I have found. And no, I do not have shares in express vpn.
In this day of internet theft, government snooping into our private lives as well as the need to keep up with high speed internet service, only one can claim to be the number one provider of all three - Express vpn!

Don’t Waste Your Time
Everything starts off fine, but after about a month the issues will start. At first I thought it was just my wife and operator error, but a month later I started to have more and more issues. So let’s begin.... do you love scrolling through your news feed or watching videos on Facebook? Not anymore after a joyous ~15min you’ll be forced to troubleshoot your connection as it drops and struggles to reconnect. When and if you get it working again, usually by manually disconnecting or switching locations Facebook will force you to begin anew as it refreshes your feed since you just got on the internet...again. You will get to spend quality time with customer service time and just when you think their advice worked... guess what... it didn’t. Lost connection, waiting, manually disconnecting, trying to reconnect, waiting, manually disconnecting, switching locations, more waiting, manually disconnecting, switching locations, and more waiting, deleting app, reinstalling app, more waiting, resetting settings to prescribed settings per customer service, trying to connect, more waiting, restarting your phone, more waiting, contacting customer service, new prescription settings, and finally a connection till you guessed it... tomorrow or sooner just to start again.
Good at first, now not so much.
I initially was all about Express VPN. In the beginning it worked as advertised. Two months later would drop unexpectedly and phishing spam seem to increase at alarming rate about that same time. Here lately it says I’m connected but apps or browsers report “timed out” or “no internet connection”. Tried different servers and that solves the problem short term only as the same issues creep back up, sometimes only after a day or two. I’ve had to uninstall the app on at least 3 occasions to get it working. It does what it advertises but only w/certain browsers. It does work w/all major streaming platforms, you might have to try a few servers to find one that it will work with but that’s to be expected. I got this app & subscription because I would not connect to a public WiFi/hotspot or even Barnes & Noble network for fear of my personal info being compromised, &, at the time our carrier did not have unlimited data. Connecting to a public hotspot is 50/50 that it’ll work smoothly, but I suspect that has more to do with the way the public hotspot is configured because on a private network this app works decent, when it works. Bear in mind nothing is fool proof. This app is certainly no exception.
